Noble Rebel – Loch Lomond riporta i malti miscelati sotto i riflettori

Nobile ribelle

With the launch of Noble Rebel, Loch Lomond has put its weight behind a clever and highly marketable category

Long before Scotland thrust single malts into the limelight, the country’s distillers had mastered the art of the blend. Nowhere had blends been more championed than in the country’s whisky regions, allowing multitudes of flavour profiles to be created, from the Highlands to the Islands.

In recent years, Scottish blends have taken a back seat in the face of the global popularity of single malts. However, when Loch Lomond decided to launch a new youthful and energetic brand, it put its faith back in the blended malt whisky category.

The Noble Rebel is a series of artfully curated releases, led by master blender Michael Henry. As master blender he has the distinction of creating and developing the Loch Lomond signature profile – a fruit forward, honeyed and smoky peat character.

The DNA of the parent brand can be easily traced through the Noble Rebel bottles too, with their trio of cask types and careful curation.

Precise Flavours

Blended malts remain a popular category – mostly because they are so precise in their ability to create exactly what the master blender is striving for. If the label says they’ll be sweet then you can almost guarantee that honey, caramel and burnt sugars will be to the fore.

This is because the master blender selects exactly the components they require to create their blend. They can increase or reduce the sweetness, fruit layers or smoked elements at will, creating specifically the whisky they set out for.

In a market as crowded as Scottish whisky, it can be reassuring to reach for a bottle on a shelf that you know will carry a flavour profile you can depend upon – and at a price you can return to again and again.

Here’s an overview of the three Noble Rebel bottles:

Orchard Outburst

Matured in ex-bourbon casks, this 46% non-age statement whisky uses a portion of malt that was fermented using a Chardonnay wine yeast. This yields high levels of fruit components in the flavour profile, boosting the citrus element particularly.

On the nose and palate you can expect lots of crisp orchard fruits with a touch of sea salt and lots of lemon zest.

Smoke Symphony

Not surprisingly, this is their peaty option. Matured in rioja wine casks and cut through with smoked malt, this darker malt blend has lots of red berries, chilli notes and peat.

There’s lots of smoke and fruit on the finish also with a satisfying summer feel and texture.

Hazelnut Harmony

Loch Lomond used toasted American oak casks for the maturation of this expression, bringing lots of honey, vanilla and hazelnut to the fore. Like its siblings, it’s bottled at 46% and you’ll find honeycomb and pear hidden in here too, with an easy-drinking finish with slight black pepper spice.
