This little distillery is rightfully getting credit for their exciting small batch limited releases. Finishing in dark rum and PX casks give warm toffee, molasses and raisins throughout. A whisky to savour.

Killowen 6 yo rum and raisin is a superb and hugely popular release from the Co Down micro-distillery. Founded by distiller Brendan Carty, the Killowen distillery has made a big impact on the Irish whiskey scene.

The Killowen rum cask release is a headliner and each of its editions has been a sellout. The fanbase for Killowen is very committed and are known as the Killowen Kult, a diverse group of whiskey fans that recognise the dedication the distillery pours into its highly limited release series.

For this bottling, the distillery uses sourced distillate from a distillery in neighboring County Louth and blends it in rich PX casks and dark rum casks (as well as a lightly charred virgin cask) to create the signature flavour of rum raisin, tropical fruits and rich molasses that characterise this release.

Killowen dark rum cask is a very special maturation vessel that offers abundant raisin, dried fruits amidst tropical fruits where as the famous apples and pear flavour underpins it all within the sourced distillate.

Tasting notes

Aroma

Rum and raisin hit the nose immediately with this terrific single malt. Lots of dark fruit notes follow with a rich dark sugar undertone.

Taste

On the palate, you can expect figs, dark raisins, prunes and lots of coconut and tropical notes from the rum cask.

Finish

The PX continues to make its presence felt on the finish of Killowen 6 yo Rum and Raisin with lots more molasses and dark fruit embedded within this fine single malt.

This is a cask strength release with an alcohol content of 55%. This highly limited release consists of some 990 bottles.

Killowen is a dynamic business that uses flame-burning kilns on its own unfiltered spirit, no added colouring and no chilled filtration.
