WhistlePig 10 Year Old Straight Rye

Made with mostly Canadian Rye and finished in virgin oak barrels, this is one of the oldest WhistlePig available.

WhistlePig have become the most successful champions of the small batch rye whiskey journey. Based in a farm in Vermont, the distillery sources Canadian rye and matures and finishes it in a range of cask types, creating what it believes to be the quintessential rye.

Oldest release

As well as being one of the oldest releases from WhistlePig, it is a high rye whiskey and representative of the fearless pursuit of excellence within the WhistlePig family.

Underpinning the original master distillers vision this is an old rye with a full-on flavour profile. Warm rye spices permeate the aroma with notes of herbal thyme and flavour throughout with lots of dark chocolate, warm baking spices and sweet malt layers.

Official tasting notes

Aroma

On the nose you will find notes of orange rind, anise, barrel char, creamy caramels and rye spice. Raspberry jam and vanilla cola are also evident on the aroma while a fresh peppermint layer breaks through.

Palate

This is a spice-forward whiskey and you’ll discover that on the palate of WhistlePig 10-year-old. There’s lots of sweet muscovado sugar here layered with sweet vanilla, orange peel and caramel shortbread. Warm butterscotch also permeates new layers of this flavor-led pour.

Finish

Straight rye whiskey has a lovely gentle medium length finish and this release has lots of creamy butterscotch, sour cherries and orange rind round. The notes of caramel shortbread linger through the finish, softening the allspice burst and bright oak notes.

Although initially matured in Canada, this is a whiskey that becomes very much a Vermont triumph, something which Wine Enthusiast recognised when it awarded this certified kosher whiskey 96 points.

WhistlePig Farm

The brand began with a mission to reinvent and reintroduce rye whiskey to the world. Once an incredibly popular whiskey category, it had all but died out after prohibition. The original master distiller’s vision, that of Dave Pickerell, who died in 2018, has bolstered the brand’s advance in the rye market relying on rye as the primary ingredient. This small batch rye is a superb legacy from the man who started it all.
