Scotch Whisky

The Scottish whisky industry is the dominant and bestselling whisky category in the world. Its rich array of single malt and grain whiskies offers an unbeatable range of whisky types emulated by many other whisky-producing countries.

Scotland is heralded for its single malt scotch whiskey production, but it also leads the world in producing Scottish grain whisky, Scottish blended whisky, and niche whisky categories like rye whisky.

The country maintains five official whisky regions, each producing a flavour profile and whisky personality rooted in its respective region: Islay, the Highlands, Campbeltown, the Lowlands and Speyside. The Islands is a sixth unofficial region that is generally included.

Islay

This island off the west coast of Scotland is the country’s most famous whisky region. Islay traditionally produces heavily peated whisky, and some of the most famous Scottish whisky producers operate from there. These include Ardbeg, Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Caol Ila, Port Ellen and Bunnahabhain.

Whisky fans adore the smoky profile and flavours that these distilleries create, and some of the most famous smoky bottles come from here. People travel each year to visit the island, tour its distilleries and meet the people who make bottles like Ardbeg Hypernova, which is bottled at 51% and has an almost chewy, intense peat flavour. Caol Ila 25, on the other hand, manages to combine its smoky and peaty flavour with notes of honey, liquorice and lemon.  Laphroaig 10 is one of the original Islay bottles that wrapped peat, seaweed and sweetness together and is often an entry-level bottle for new peated whisky fans.

The Highlands

Back on the mainland of Scotland, you’ll find the Highlands. The whiskies from this region are characterised by offering the greatest diversity of flavours. You’ll find all of Scotland’s flavours somewhere in the distilleries of the Highlands. Some of the best-known distilleries include The Macallan, Dalmore, Dalwhinnie, Glengoyne, Fettercairn and Glenmorangie

The whiskies from the Highlands are known for their softer, usually non-peated, heather and honey flavours. Some of the bestselling include Glenmorangie 18, matured in ex-bourbon and oloroso sherry casks. The Macallan 15 Double Cask is a classic in the Highland region, with all the fruit and sherry notes that the brand is known for. Similarly, the Dalmore 21 captures the essence of the Highlands with its layers of sweet fruit, marzipan and wood spice.

Campbeltown

The Mull peninsula holds perhaps the least known but once most important Scottish whisky region: Campbeltown. This southwestern peninsula, near Islay, was once the centre of the whisky world, with around 30 distilleries. Today, there are only three, but each is still a powerful engine of the industry: Springbank, Glen Scotia, and Glengyle

Dried fruit, vanilla, nuts and brine are the flavours that generally characterise Campbeltown. The distilleries there produce a whisky that is sweet and well-rounded but also captures a sense of the salt and brine of the sea.

Glen Scotia 18 is a classic example. Matured in ex-bourbon and hogsheads, it is floral and aromatic with hints of sea spray and spice.  Glen Scotia Victoriana, meanwhile is a glance back at the Distillery’s Victorian roots by using deeply charred ex-bourbon and Pedro Ximenes casks to create an even more intense spiced flavour profile. Bottled at cask strength of 54.2%.

The Lowlands

This region near Scotland’s border with England is currently enjoying a renaissance. It typically produces whisky that is lighter in style and often celebrates grain and blended whisky. Some of the better-known distilleries here include the now-closed Cambus Distillery as well as Girvan and Glenkinchie.

Cambus produced one of Scotland’s oldest grain whiskies in the Cambus 40, which comes wrapped in flavours of caramel, pears and plums. Bottled at 52.7%, it’s a classic grain release that continues to attract whisky fans. Girvan also produces incredibly well-matured whisky like the Girvan 25 Patent Still. This vintage grain whisky is a wonderful example of what can be achieved with grain and masterful maturation. Glenkinchie Distiller’s Edition, meanwhile, is a single malt from the Lowlands that uses Amontillado casks to finish and enhance all the nutty, silky layers of this elegant pour.

Speyside

This dynamic and distillery-heavy region is a massive draw to Scotland’s whisky industry. It is characterised by its heavy use of sherry casks in maturation and strives to create ever-deeper flavours and distillery personalities with its output. There are close to fifty working distilleries in Speyside. Some of the best-known include Glenfarclas, Glenallachie, Benriach, Linkwood, Mortlach and Glenfiddich.

Glenallachie was built in the 196s and is today run by a team that includes Billy Walker, the great Scottish whisky maker. His single malt collection at Glenallachie is world-leading and includes bottles such as Glenallachie 18 and Glenallachie 10 French Oak. Mortlach is a very popular Speyside brand famous for its meaty sherry flavours. It produces bottles like Mortlach 16 and its older sibling Mortlach 26.

The Islands

This wide and diverse geographical region comprises the whisky-producing islands off Scotland, excluding Islay, which is its own region. It’s not an official region recognised in the Scotch whisky regulations, but it is generally considered a region in its own right by whisky makers. It reaches as far north as the Orkney Islands and also includes the islands of Mull, Jura, Arran, Skye and Raasay.

The flavour profile of the Islands varies but generally captures salty, briny, and peated notes. Some of the better-known distilleries in the Islands region include Highland Park, Jura, Talisker, Tobermory and Arran.

Talisker 10 is the starting point for many whisky fans of this region. Its aroma comes packed with sea salt and brine, while its palate unfolds into a smoky, sweet layer with a pepper finish. Highland Park also produces some typically Island-region whisky. This Highland Park 18 is a single cask release from the Orkney distillery. Bottled at 57.4%, it’s packed with notes of rich toasted oak, vanilla and almond notes. Whisky from Arran Distillery is less known but no less celebrated by those who discover it. This single cask single malt, the Arran Old & Rare 24 from Hunter Laing, is a superb release.
