In the few short years since Teeling established itself at the heart of Dublin, it has become a cornerstone in the city’s (and the country’s) whiskey resurgence. It has made a terrific impact on the Irish whiskey industry. The new distillery opened in 2015 in Newmarket Square near the city centre of Dublin. This hub of operations helped kickstart an entire rejuvenation of the locality, bringing business and tourists to one of Dublin’s oldest quarters.

Known as the Liberties, Teeling Distillery has made its home in a traditionally working class area that is synonymous with Dublin’s rich character and personality.

The distillery is owned by the Teeling family and run by brothers Stephen and Jack Teeling. Under the tutelage of their father, John Teeling, they have created a family whiskey brand that has claimed its place at the heart of Irish distilling.

John Teeling famously developed Cooley Distillery in the late 1980s, the first new distillery to open in Ireland for generations and went on to produce award-winning whiskey brands such as Tyrconnell and Kilbeggan. Cooley built a strong reputation very quickly and the entire operation was eventually sold to Beam Suntory in 2014, for an estimated €71 million-plus.

One year later, Teeling Distillery opened its doors and the success of this Irish whiskey family has continued, claiming Best in the World titles as well as every other possible award for its stellar releases.

Using traditional and unconventional techniques, Teeling has developed a core range that is incredibly popular, creating small-batch bottlings in this craft distillery on Marrowbone Lane. Known as the Unconventional Collection, Teeling has experimented with new and innovative flavours to build their brand personality in Dublin.

Five wine casks were used in the creation of the Teeling Single Malt: Sherry, Port, Madeira, White Burgundy and Cabernet Sauvignon. Bottled at 46%, it is a wonderfully popular single malt and comes with all the flavour and personality that you would expect from a distillery’s leading release.

The cask types create a complex but balanced whiskey that is definitely fruit-forward and layered with pineapple, berries, ginger, apricot, and plums.

Bottled at 46%, this terrific single pot still uses 50% malted and 50% unmalted barley. It’s matured in a combination of new oak, ex-wine and ex-bourbon barrels. Marketed under the Spirit of Dublin slogan, it was the first single pot still to emerge from the city in many decades when it was launched.

With a fruit-forward aroma with lots of spice and black pepper fans celebrate its oily mouthfeel, long finish and rich complex flavour.

This single-grain release is a leading light in its category. Made with a combination of 95% corn and 5% malted barley, it is triple distilled and matured exclusively in French oak, ex-cabernet sauvignon wine casks.

The nose brings lots of fruit and spice while the palate carries a silky smooth texture that is layered with berries and vanilla, honey and pepper. The red wine cask also delivers a dryness that is very appealing.

Teeling Small Batch is a most interesting blended Irish whiskey. Positioned at entry level, it’s a blend of grain and malt whiskey that is matured in ex-bourbon before being married in a rum cask for six months before bottling at 46%.

The aroma comes packed with lots of summer fruits and citrus while the palate is sweet and fruity with layers of honey, stewed apple and vanilla. It has a slightly dry mouthfeel but a rich complexity that is very easy to drink.

Teeling has a range of extra-mature releases that have dominated the industry.

Using exemplary whiskey from Cooley while their own new make is maturing, they have managed to create wonderfully mature bottlings that have captured headlines everywhere whiskey is written about.

Bottled as part of the Vintage Reserve Collection, the oldest release is a 37-year-old bottle of single malt. This is one of the oldest Irish whiskeys in the world and is limited to 175 bottles. Bottled at 41.3% it is matured in ex-bourbon.

In 2019 Teeling had a landmark year when its 24-year-old single malt release won the world’s best single malt at the World Whiskies Awards. Matured first in ex-bourbon it was then finished in Sauterne casks.

Limited to 5000 bottles it was released at 46% and became an immediate best-seller and collector’s item even before the win.

Teeling has many special releases in its portfolio, keeping fans and collectors busy as they continue to develop the very special character of their whiskey. As the latest generation of the Teeling family to drive this slice of Irish whiskey, their careful management of hand selected casks has driven their brand to the forefront.

Their special editions include Blackpitts, a peated single malt, Wonders of Wood, a series of single pot still whiskies finished in experimental cask types and Teeling Stout cask – one of a range of beer finished whiskies they produce.
