Teeling Single Grain
This unique style in Irish whiskey has rightfully won plenty of awards. With soft barley notes on the nose, followed by hints of spice and citrus on the palate, proving that grain whiskey has complexities that people should seek out.
Great single grain Irish whiskey is relatively rare. Although there are many examples of the single grain category, they simply don’t hold the attention of whiskey fans the way that single malt or single pot still does. This Teeling Single Grain whiskey release has started to change that.
Matured exclusively in American red wine casks it became an immediate fan favourite when at launch. Made with an unconventional mash bill consisting of 95% corn and 5% malted barley, it is deliciously sweet and is easily one of the most popular Irish single grain whiskies.
Tasting Notes
Matured in Californian Cabernet Sauvignon casks, Teeling Single Grain is enriched with a wonderful aroma and palate with a delicate yet robust finish.
Aroma
On the nose you can expect fruit notes wrapped up in spicy cereal, fragrant vanilla and sweet undertones that are slightly floral. The nose opens further with a wholly unique honeyed apple flesh scent.
Taste
The palate follows with a rush of deep berry notes that comes directly from the red wine barrels with red grape and dried cranberry developing a silky smooth mouthfeel alongside layers of brown sugar and, some fans say, evaporated milk.
Finish
There is a distinctly sweet flavour profile in this whiskey that carries to the finish, all wrapped up in spice and fruit notes. There is a tannic influence from the wine casks but it works well in the single-grain, derived from column distillation, as most single-grain whiskies are.
Californian cabernet sauvignon wine has its own reputation and this carries the personality of this single-grain whiskey far. It creates a buttery and dry finish that compliments the traditional honey and light vanilla aspect of single grain whiskey.
The Teeling Approach
Teeling is renowned for its experimentation in cask types and the creation of whiskies that stand alone in a crowded market. This single grain has all the attributes that have put the brand at the top of the best whiskeys list time and again. It was a category winner at the 2021 World Whisky Awards as well as taking Best Irish Single Grain whiskey at the Irish Whiskey Awards in 2016 and 2018. It was also awarded Masters at the Irish Whisky Masters 2022. The bottling has been particularly noted at these awards for its unusual flavour profile which have been variously described as containing elements of sweet egg custard and golden syrup tart.
