What is Method and Madness?

Method and Madness is an Irish whiskey and gin brand created by Irish distillers in their Midleton distillery in Co Cork. It is made in the Method and Madness micro-distillery. This is located on the grounds of the same distillery that makes Jameson, Powers and Redbreast whiskey. It is an experimental brand made up of experienced distillery staff such as coopers, blenders, distillers and more. They represent the method. Each of these got a young apprentice and they represent the madness. Together their output is Method & Madness. It has a young Irish whiskey history but a big footprint in the whiskey industry.

What does Method and Madness produce?

Method and Madness produces one gin and a single grain whiskey, a single malt whiskey and a single pot still whiskey, as well as a growing number of limited edition releases. The grain, pot still and malt whiskeys are the core range while the micro-distillery produces a long list of one-off or limited edition bottlings that experiment with cask types, maturation periods and finishes.

What is Method and Madness gin like?

Method and Madness gin is made with 16 botanicals, including black lemon and Irish gorse flower. It is bottled at 43% ABV and has a distinct citrus and ginger nose while its palate offers ginger, pine taste and spice.

What is Method and Madness Single Grain like?

Method and Madness single grain is a light single grain whiskey finished in virgin Spanish oak and is a non-age statement whiskey. It is probably around five years old and is a sweet, grain forward distillate layered with toasted oak, a hint of grapefruit and wood spice. Mint and oak on the finish. It is bottled at 46% ABV and its initial maturation is in ex-bourbon barrels.

What is Method and Madness Single Malt like?

Method and Madness Irish single malt is a rich and creamy whiskey with lots of sweet candy notes and a floral identity. It is finished in French Limousin Oak after its first maturation in ex-bourbon casks. On the nose you’ll experience fresh cereals and freshly shelled peanut while the palate delivers lots of cinnamon, ice cream wafer and wood. It has a long sweet finish with lots of wood spice. Bottled at 46%, it is a 14-year-old whiskey that was initially laid down in 2002.

What is Method and Madness Single Pot Still like?

Method and Madness Single Pot Still is matured in sherry and bourbon barrels before being finished in French Chestnut casks – something that the distillery had not tried before. Normally all the whiskey at the distillery is finished in oak but the Method and Madness range allows experimentation in other woods. Single Pot Still is a whiskey style that is native to Ireland. It is spicy, creamy and has note of black pepper and zesty wood spices among its sweet cereal and honeyed layers. It is triple distilled and bottled at 46% ABV.

Yes, Method and Madness is distributed in the US by Castle Brands Inc who report they are very good partners. Castle Brands distribute to stores across the US as well as to online retailers. What do you mix with Method and Madness gin?

Method and Madness gin is most often served with carbonated tonic water and a slice of lemon or fresh peeled grapefruit. Some people also like to add elderflower cordial to give it an even more floral and natural sweetness.

Where is method and madness made?

Method and Madness is made at a micro-distillery on the grounds of the Midleton Distillery in Co Cork. While it is micro by Irish Distillers standards it is around the same size or even bigger than the majority of craft distilleries in Ireland. Midleton Distillery operates a 24-hour, seven days a week distillation for its major brands, Jameson, Powers and Redbreast.

What other Method and Madness whiskies are there?

There is a large range of special edition releases from the micro-distillery. They include vintage whiskeys such as Method and Madness Limited Edition 33-year-old Mizunara oak cask finish and the 28-year-old limited edition Single Pot Still. They also produce a Rye & Malt edition, a Mulberry cask edition, an Acacia Wood release and a Cherrywood bottling. There are many other cask types in the range that develop the Method and Madness range.

What kind of flavours can I expect with Method and Madness?

There are lots of typical flavours like wood spice playing on the whiskey, sweet cereal, new pencil shavings, clove spiciness and lots of zesty wood spices finish depending on the bottle you choose. You will also find others such as the Japanese finishes that offer light rose petal, notes of fresh rain, warm toasted oak and lots of these come from the virgin Spanish oak casks as well as the ex-bourbon barrels. The majority of the Method and Madness whiskeys use bourbon barrels finished in another cask. Tasting notes for the Method and Madness range are wide and extremely diverse.
