Yellow spot whiskey

This intricate 12-year-old single pot still whiskey, has developed its distinct character from maturation in a combination of 3 cask types, bourbon, sherry and Malaga. It’s a truly special single pot still whiskey.

Yellow Spot is made by Irish Distillers in Cork in partnership with its original owners the Mitchell & Sons family from Dublin. It is distilled and matured at the Midleton Distillery.

Yellow Spot is a great whiskey with a huge fan following. It has been made since the late 1800s by the Mitchell family in Dublin who were wine merchants at the time and who created the Spot range of whiskies.

They began maturing their whiskey in wine casks that they had imported and used a painted colour coding on each cask to remind themselves which cask had which whiskey within it. This colour coding became the Spot range and remains just as useful today for whiskey drinkers when choosing their preferred Spot bottle off the shelf.

How old is Yellow Spot?

Yellow Spot is a 12-year-old whiskey. It is one of a family of four Spot whiskies, each of which has a different colour to identify its vintage – Red (15 years), Yellow (12 years), Blue (8 years) and Green (10 years).

Yellow Spot is one of the finest examples of Irish single pot still. This is a traditional whiskey style that is native to Ireland. It is a combination of malted and unmalted barley. The unmalted element or green barley creates a smoothness and a creamy yet spicy texture that single malt lacks.

What does Yellow Spot taste like?

Yellow Spot has a wonderful texture and flavour. Its tasting notes include a honey sweetness, the flavours of red bell peppers, clove oil, red grape, red apples and coffee creamy milk chocolate.

This rich flavour profile comes from its maturation in Spanish Malaga casks as well as Spanish sherry butts. You’ll find lots of cracked pepper, dry barley and an exotic sweet note in this whiskey that is hard to resist.

What kind of casks is Yellow Spot matured in?

Yellow Spot is matured in three cask types – American bourbon barrels, malaga casks and Spanish sherry butts. The marriage of these three oak cask types ensures that Yellow Spot 12-year=old is a rich and elegant experience, packed with flavour and with a truly complex texture.

The ex-Malaga casks in the Yellow Spot release brings lots of the more exotic flavours like clove oil, red apples and honey sweetness.

Because Yellow Spot is a single-pot still whiskey it has lots of creamy milk chocolate and fresh coffee elements. These are relatively rare in single malts and partnered with the cracked black pepper and toasted oak they create a fantastic taste experience.
