In the 1980s many Scottish whisky distilleries faced into a bleak economy. Many had to make decisions that saw them shut down. So it was for Glendronach which was mothballed from 1996-2002. Once up and running again the whiskey market started climbing and not surprisingly this great Highland distillery ran out of stock.

Consequently, it’s hugely popular 15-year-old was discontinued. Three years later, in 2018, it came back, but this time with a reinvention that added PX sherry to this already sherry-forward whisky. Bottles at 46% it’s a whisky that delivers all its surprises on the first sip.

It’s a wonderful whiskey for anyone who wants to get introduced to sherry maturation. It’s ripe and bursting with fruit and spices and its new owners, Brown Forman, are likely very happy with the result. The Revival is a terrific seller and will be in the core collection for many years to come. If you can, try it alongside the Glendronach 12-year-old to see just what those extra three years can do to an already fine single malt.

Oloroso and PX barrels allow the rich sweet GlenDronach characteristics to rise to the top in this flavour packed whisky. It's distinguished by it layers of dried fruits, soft spices and rich malt flavour. Glendronach 15 is made at the Glendronach Distillery near Forgue in the Highlands and in a short amount of time has come to help represent the flavour profile of the region

Glendronach Distillery is owned by Brown Forman Corporation, who purchased it along with the BenRiach and GlenGlassaugh distilleries in 2018. Adding these three Scottish titles to their global portfolio of bourbon, vodka, gin and tequila brands created a powerful engine for their future development.

Glendronach 15 is called the Revival because it is the return of a much-loved single malt that stopped production in 2015. In recent years it was brought back to much acclaim from its fans and retailers. It is not exactly the same whiskey but is very similar to the original Glendronach 15. The production stopped simply because of dwindling stocks at Glendronach. Once some time passed and they were renewed the Glendronach 15 returned.
Glendronach 15 is matured in Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso Sherry casks. These are both incredibly flavour-packed cask types and help create the huge flavour of the Glendronach 15.

Pedro Ximenez is a white grape variety from Spain that is used to create a sweet dessert wine. Oloroso is a fortified wine, also from Spain. It is dark and nutty and very sweet. The combination of these two wines creates an incredible palate for the Glendronach 15 to develop within.

Glendronach 15 is made at one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. With almost 200 years of experience, it can predict the future better than most and its current road to development is proving to be a big success.

By bringing its stock of vintage casks to the fore, it’s making a statement on its heritage and position in the industry without the level of drama or fanfare that other brands might employ. The quality of its whisky underpins its ambition and fans are quietly moving towards the Glendronach stable in ever-growing numbers.

Because Glendronach 15 is exclusively aged in two very rich casks you can expect a complex and heavily sherried whisky. This is a great taste experience because it delivers lots of contrasting and complementary flavours such as toasted brown sugar, dark chocolate, dark fruits, roasted nut, coffee beans and blackberry.

The influence of the casks creates a wonderful outcome for the single malt Scotch in the cask and the tasting notes that accompany the bottle are suitably impressive. Glendronach 15 is bottled at 46% ABV.

Many reviewers and fans refer to the sponge-cake-drenched and toasted brown sugar of the Glendronach 15-year-old revival as being reminiscent of Christmas. The toasted wood flavours and all the dried fruit and dark chocolate make this a wonderful single malt scotch to enjoy by the fireside. But of course, it is enjoyed year-round also.

Glendronach 15 has won many awards. The most prestigious is the Best in Show award at the San Francisco World Spirits competition in 2020. This is an international and industry best awards event that is held annually to discover the very best releases on the market in any given year.

In a flourishing worldwide market the award going to the Glendronach 15 in 2020 was a statement of the distillery's intent and the quality of their output.

Rachel Barrie is the Master Blender at Glendronach, as well as also carrying out that role at BenRiach and GlenGlassaugh distilleries.

A scientist by profession, she grew up beside the Glendronach Distillery and has spent decades working in the whisky industry. A large part of her role is the selection of suitable barrels for the maturation of the Glendronach spirit such as both oloroso and the PX casks used in the Glendronach 15 year old.
