Glengoyne 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
With a large proportion of its time resting in first fill sherry casks, this 18 year old has layers of red fruit and apples on the nose. Its full-bodied palate of cocoa and marmalade leads to a sublime long warming finish.
Slowest stills in Scotland
Glengoyne Distillery staff maintain that they run the slowest stills in Scotland and, according to their marketing, if there’s a slower way to do things they’ll find it. Their barley is air-dried, their casks are seasoned and prepared for six years and they like long and slow maturation times. This is the perfect starting position for Glengoyne 18-year-old, a bottle that first landed on retailer’s shelves in 2012, replacing a 17-year-old bottle in a revamp that had previously been part of the core range.
The Highland Line
Glengoyne Distillery is located on the Highland Line and is said to straddle both Scotland’s Highlands and Lowland regions. The stills are in the Highlands and the maturation warehouses are across the road in the lowlands. But from a personality perspective this is definitely a Highland pour.
Bottled at 43% ABV, it was matured in ex-bourbon and then spent a period of time in first-fill oloroso sherry casks. It has a beautiful gold colour and a rich and elegant glow.
Highland single malt whisky marries with refill sherry casks beautifully, letting that sherry cask influence bleed through the layers of single malt with notes of candied orange peel, custard creams and rich dark fruits.
This Highland single malt Scotch is a true special occasion pour. With a rich and spicy flavour, it builds on lots of fruit and sweet creamy layers. It’s a warming pour and, as you taste, the palate is flooded with honey, butterscotch, custard and caramel.
