Highland Park 12 is a cornerstone of Scottish malt distilling and a benchmark for the industry. Located far out in the North Sea, the distillery has been operating on the Orkney islands since 1798. Located in Kirkwall, the capital and on the largest of the Orkneys, its extreme location and rich habitat has shaped the whisky in flavour and in personality.
The peat is cut from its own bogs, the water bubbles up through the bedrock of the island and the casks it fills mature in the wind, sun and rain of one of Scotland’s wildest landscapes. It’s now owned by the Edrington Group, a Glasgow-based international drinks conglomerate that also has The Macallan in its stable. Just like with The Macallan, global ambition drives this island brand and its future is determinedly bright.
This 12-year-old Highland Park bottle is a core release in a collection that also includes a 10-, 15-, 18- and 21-year-old. The 12 is perfectly balanced, with just enough sherry sweetness to match the lightly peated layers within it. Bottled at 40%, it’s matured in European and American oak. It’s makers laud notes of Seville orange on the nose coupled with nutmeg, cloves, honey and peat smoke on the palette. It’s a wonderful introduction to the flavour profile of the Orkney brand.
