Cardhu 14 comes from a distillery with an exceptional pedigree. Not only are its 1824 illicit farm distillery origins well documented and celebrated, but it is also the spiritual home of Johnnie Walker. It was the first distillery that John Walker and Sons bought back in the 1890s and remains a significant driver of Johnnie Walker blends today.

Now owned by Diageo, it retains its lofty Speyside position, pulling water from the Mannoch Hills and surrounding area. The name Cardhu is a reworking of the original Carn Dubh, meaning black rock.

As most of its output is siphoned towards blends, its smooth and balanced single malt is a rare treat, most often experienced in the core 12-year-old Cardhu release. This 14-year-old bottling was finished in Amontillado sherry-seasoned hogsheads and was selected for the Diageo Special Releases series in 2019. This was the Rare by Nature-themed year and the bees that pollinate the heather around the distillery take pride of place on the label.

Bottled at 55% cask strength, this edition of Cardhu 14 saw just 4,782 bottles released. With aromas of grape, peach and cherry, the taste unfolds to a creamy smooth, fruit-forward palate with lots of honey and fudge. It has a spicy dry finish with extra layers of Amontillado to the fore, pulled from this dry sherry fortified wine.
