Annual release

Highland Park 21-year-old 2020 release is a superb example of what the Orkney Island distillery can produce. Located in Kirkwell, the main town on the largest of the Orkney archipelago’s islands, the single malt producer Highland Park Distillery has been operating since 1826.

This annual release of their 21-year-old single malt is one of the most prestigious bottlings in the distillery’s core collection.

Tasting notes

The official tasting notes for Highland Park 21-year-old reveal a whisky that is packed with flavour, creating a well-balanced distinctively rich scotch whisky.

On the nose you can expect lightly toasted oak, aromatic peat smoke, floral notes and a wonderful deep vanilla cream and toffee. On the taste you’ll discover layers of chocolate, sun-ripened oranges and sweet fruit flavours including apple and heather honey. This leads to a spicy finish with more of that dark chocolate and a hint of peaty flavour pear.

Bottled with an ABV of 46%, this full-bodied whisky has taken many awards, including the Masters Medal at the Scotch Whisky Masters; Gold at the International Spirits Challenge 2021 and a host of regional and national awards.

Highland Park 21 always enjoys limited availability, not only for its superior age and flavour but also for its sheer popularity among fans.

Cask selection

Three types of casks are used in the maturation of Highland Park 21. The single malt whisky is matured in ex-bourbon casks as well as first-fill sherry hogsheads and bourbon refill casks. This triple maturation creates a complex and flavour-packed whisky that has won awards all over the world. The 2020 edition was created from just 55 hand-selected casks, and each cask type has brought its own personality to the fore.

The first-fill European oak sherry hogshead brings unusual notes of ginger, pineapple and orange.

The ex-bourbon casks bring layers of vanilla and honey that permeate the malt throughout.

The refill casks allow a balance of each of these flavours to occur with a slight hint of aromatic peat smoke on the aroma and the palate, married with toasted oak and charred wood notes.

The Edrington Group

Highland Park distillery is owned by the Edrington Group, an independent spirits conglomerate based in the city of Glasgow. With a healthy stable of brands already in place, it also owns the Macallan, one of the richest and most sought-after whisky brands in the world. Alongside that is another whisky with a fast-growing fanbase, the Glenrothes.

Edrington’s approach appears to be working well as they build and reinforce the quality basis of each of their whisky houses. In the case of Highland Park, they aim to keep everything as traditional and local as possible.

Island influence

The aromatic peat smoke in their whisky comes from the island’s own boglands. These bogs are not fed by trees, which don’t do well on this windswept island, but by the heathers that carpet the island, fueling the heather honey personality of the brand.

It’s a wild and rugged place with a rocky coastline and salty air all year round. This feeds the maritime influence on their casks, embedding a salt and brine element to their whisky that comes directly from the environment.

Highland Park’s 21-year-old 2020 release is undoubtedly one of the finest and most complex single malts to emerge from Scotland in recent decades. Each year’s new release allows Highland Park to further embed the DNA of its whiskies into every bottle and its choice of casks allows the rich and distinctively rich palate to develop year-on-year.
