High Coast American Oak

The newly charred American Oak casks give a quality finish to this single malt from one of the leaders of the Swedish whisky industry.

This five-year-old single malt from High Coast Distillery is part of the original Box whisky series. The Swedish whisky maker used ex-Bourbon and virgin American oak to mature the spirit which was bottled at cask strength of 50.8%.

Located on the Ångermanälven river in the east of Sweden, High coast prodcues a series of peated and unpeated single malts and blends that are meticiously aged and in a range of cask types.

Bourbon barrels are of course a big part of the high Coast story but they also specialise in Hungarian oak as well as using lots of new American oak to create their signature style.

High Coast American Oak is one of the distillery’s earlier bottlings and uses the original packaging before Box Distillery rebranded as High Coast. The bottle uses the Box American Oak label that the company originally registered under.

Tasting notes

Aroma: On the nose you can expect lots of spice, coconut and peat. It’s a heady combination that prepares for the flavour ahead.

Palate: Expect lots of vanilla, smoke and sweet honey on the palate of this rich and inviting pour.

Finish: The medium finish of this single malt celebrates the peat in particular.

Produced in High Coast’s warehouses in the natural wilderness surrounding the distillery, this release was matured for 4.5 years in ex-bourbon before transferring for a final eight months in virgin American oak. This finish injected a terriffic spice to the whisky that comes from the new oak and has been welcomed in countries all around the world in review.

High Coast was created on an old factory site alongside a river in the region of Höga Kusten (High Coast), a coastal spot about 500kms from Stockholm. It exists in a wonderfully natural landscape that is popular with Swedes seeking an escape from urban life. Rivers, valleys, forests and coastline are the building blocks of the countryside here.

Peat

The whisky maker produces a range of highly peated and unpeated single malt in the Scottish tradition. Its founders, two siblings, were big fans of Scotch and wanted to investigate what they could achieve within that category, but from a Swedish perspective.

This bottling is actually the oldest release from the distillery and its use of the original packaging under the Box name makes it a compelling part of a Swedish whisky collection. The spice, vanilla and oaky edge of this double wood release from 2016 is considered the starting point for this innovative whisky maker.

Temperature

Sweden’s climate creates a special environment for whisky maturation. The temperature fluctuates widely with lows of -30 degrees in winter and +30 and above possible in summertime. The warehouses are concrete builds so they offer little protection to the casks within them, allowing the wood to swell and contract in ways that rarely happen in Scotland. The owners believe this has a big impact on the flavour of the whisky produced, creating levels of flavour at a younger age than you might find in whisky-producing countries with more stable weather fluctuations.

Rebranding itself as High Coast has helped root the brand in the landscape of Sweden. Exporting its output to countries all over the world, it offers a revolving series of special offers and limited release bottles that make up a basket of Swedish produce with smoke at its heart. While stocks last, these releases are hugely sought after.
