Lowland Scotch Whisky

Once famous for lighter, sweeter, unpeated whiskies, the Lowlands of Scotland stretch from Glasgow and Edinburgh, over to the east coast of Fife and all the way down to the border with England. The fact that Scotland’s oldest distillery, Littlemill was in the Lowlands, is proof of the history and heritage that was once so common in the region. Sadly, Littlemill is gone, however some of its vintage single malts appear very occasionally. Other famous Lowland whiskies that have fell silent, but who whiskies are still available in very small quantises include Saint Magdalene, Ladyburn and Rosebank. Indeed, Rosebank is due to reopen thanks to recent investment. While other new entrants into the world of Lowland malts have been looking to experiment with peated malts. Edinburgh is also taking part in these exciting Lowland whisky developments, with a number of distilleries opening there soon. Finally bringing whisky back to Scotland’s capital. As the lowlands are the easiest to reach of Scotland’s whisky regions, there are plenty of distilleries to visit and of course plenty of fantastic whiskies to enjoy.
