Redbreast 27 Year Old

Redbreast 27 is one of the finest pot still whiskies in Ireland. Nearly three decades old and matured in bourbon, sherry and ruby port casks, it is made by Irish Distillers in their Midleton Distillery in Co Cork.

The Redbreast brand, which continues to win the most prestigious awards for Irish whiskey, has added a stunningly rich and intense pot still whiskey to its line up. It is one of the pinnacles of whiskey from the island of Ireland. It is also the oldest core release from the Redbreast stable and joins an award-winning line up of siblings.

What does Redbreast 27 taste like?

Redbreast 27 is a luscious and fruit-laden whiskey with cinnamon sweet spices combined with flavours of exotic ripe fruit and ripe red-fleshed plums. It is bursting with flavour, having spent nearly three decades in sherry, bourbon and ruby port casks.

There are plenty of wood spices and summer berries with a vanilla sweetness and toasted oak. It’s a luxuriously fruity addition to the Redbreast family with cinnamon sweet spices, cherry menthol, exotic fruits and fresh herbs. There are wonderful sweet treacle notes with layers of black cherries.

Why is Redbreast 27 important to the Irish whiskey category?

Redbreast itself is a brand that has led the single pot still category for decades. It is easily the most famous pot still Irish whiskey and the most awarded globally. The Redbreast line up has five core bottles: Redbreast 12, Redbreast 12 cask strength, Redbreast 15, Redbreast 21 and Redbreast 27.

The 27-year-old distinguishes itself from the rest of its siblings due to its cask types and maturation. All Redbreast releases are traditionally matured in ex-bourbon and oloroso sherry casks. The 27-year-old received this combination also but in addition, it was matured in ruby port casks for the entirety of its maturation.

The maturation period here is incredibly significant also. For decades, the 21-year-old was the eldest sibling but the arrival of the 27-year-old has changed things considerably. As a core and permanent member of the Redbreast family it now takes lead position. The extra six years in cask has created a wonderfully complex and flavour-packed whiskey that has reinvented once again what the single pot still category can achieve.

Is Redbreast 27 the oldest Redbreast ever distilled?

Redbreast 27 is the oldest permanent core bottle in the range but single casks have been produced by Midleton that are older. For example, 444 bottles of a 30-year-old single cask was released in 2020. Bottles from single casks of vintage Redbreast are highly sought after, including the 22-year-old all sherry cask release that was produced in association with the Single Malt Shop.
