Glenmorangie 13 YO Cognac Cask Finish
As befits such a luxurious whisky, this Glenmorangie exudes intense wine notes, silky smooth texture and a long soft finish of grape and cherries.
This 13-year-old is a Glenmorangie Barrel Select release bottling and one of the most successful cognac cask releases in the Highland distillery’s stable.
Experimentation
Dr Bill Lumsden, the head of distilling and experimentation at the distillery had experimented with cognac casks int eh past but felt that they overpowered the Glenmorangie core whisky.
For this bottling he used cognac casks which had been filled a number of times, thus reducing the impact of the wood on the spirit and found a sweet spot that was perfect for the Glenmorangie personality.
Glenmorangie’s classic fruity tones come through wonderfully in this single malt Scotch whisky, allowing the cognac cask finish to deliver a mellow taste with delicately lightened cognac cask notes.
Glenmorangie’s fruity bursts are very well complemented by the cognac casks notes with star anise, mandarin orange and butter candy to emerge on the aroma and palate.
French oak casks bring their own personality too with forest floor notes and a subtle wood influence that elegantly unites notes of both the home spirit and the cognac.
Glenmorangie’s single malt scotch whisky and Dr Bill’s rare experiments have created a delicious marriage in this 13-year-old cognac cask finish.
Tasting notes
Aroma
Toffee apples, baked pears and apple tart combine on the nose to bring a wonderful rich and complex aroma.
Palate
The taste is equally complex with the cognac cask finish bringing more sweet pastry and baked apples to the whisky with soft hints of leather. This soft leather is an unusual note for Glenmorangie’s single malt scotch whisky but very enjoyable.
Finish
The finish brings more subtle notes and sweet fruitiness. Pears fill the flavour and the cask finish makes its presence felt with baked pears scattered throughout this whisky’s elegant footprint.
