The Diageo Special Releases series is an annual edition of singular whisky from the Diageo stable of Scottish distilleries. Clynelish 12 year old was included in the special releases 2022 collection.
The lively taste and oaky spice of this 12-year-old special release was a hit among collectors and fans alike who appreciated the inclusion of the lessor-seen Clynelish Distillery in the lineup.
The Special Releases 2022 was a collection of eight bottles that included releases from Mortlach, the Singleton of Glen Ord, Lagavulin, Talisker, Cardhu, Oban, Cameronbridge and the Clynelish 12-year-old.
The Clynelish and its oak preview was considered a little unusual in that it had a waxiness and an added sweetness and spicey heat from its maturation in refill American oak and a finish in PX sherry and oloroso sherry casks.
On the nose, you will discover a radiant sweet spicy intensity as well as an herbal note and a familiar waxy hint. The scented oak spice and herbal aromas are dominant.
On the palate, you can expect lots more spicy heat and lingering pepper notes as well as heather honey, complex fruity mincemeat as well as creamy top notes.
The finish brings a soaring intensity from the two sherry casks as well as understated suggestions of wine sweet flavours and pepper spice. You’ll find notes of tinned pears here also as the mouth-filling texture introduces a bright sweet fruitiness.
This is a bright gold-coloured whisky that some fans have described as liquid sunlight. Whatever the case, this rich liquid glows and offers spicy scents that create a palate well balanced by its complex maturation.
The herbal aromas, subtle, understated and chili spiced give this 12-year-old special releases 2022 entry a really distinctive personality.
