Clase Azul Reposado

In a family of dramatic tequila releases, the Reposado bottling stands apart. Designed to be the signature release, it’s considered by its makers to be the brand’s first icon in a lineup of aged and smoked bottlings. Made from the heart of the Blue Weber Agave plant in Mexico’s tequila homeland, Clase Azul Reposado is a standout release.

What makes Clase Azul Reposado special?

The production method used for this artisanal tequila bottling lays a solid foundation for everything the Clase Azul family represents. The Blue Weber Agave is roasted in stone fire pits and ovens for up to 72 hours to ignite the sugars and spice at the heart of this indigenous Mexican plant. The roasted agave is then crushed and the juice that’s extracted is distilled in copper pot stills.

This is an aged tequila, and so, it is left to mature for eight months in ex-bourbon American oak whiskey casks. The American oak imparts additional sweetness to the distillate, enveloping the fresh agave notes and layering clove, chocolate and hazelnut on the smooth spirit.

What separates Clase Azul Reposado from the rest of the Clase Azul range?

Clase Azul Reposado is the first extra-aged statement in the Clase Azul tequila family. While it’s not the oldest bottling, it is the first aged tequila that the brand produced, and so sits at the centre of this noble tequila lineup. The oldest bottling in the current Clase Azul lineup is Ultra, a five-year-old, multi-cask-finished bottling.

Clase Azul Reposado Flavors and Aromas

Aroma

The aroma of Clase Azul Reposado is superb. Rich with herbal agave notes, citrus and toasted wood, it’s underpinned with warm clove and vanilla.

Taste

The palate and flavour of Clase Azul Reposado are equally attractive. Orange peel and bitter chocolate deliver more agave nectar to the palate, layered with roast hazelnut.

Finish

The finish is silky and sweet. It has a distinct spiced note on the palate, softened by cinnamon and burnt sugars.

Texture and colour

The deep gold of Clase Azul Reposado is punctuated by sparks of amber and orange, highlighting the silky-smooth texture of this elegant pour.

Similar bottles to Clase Azul Reposado

Fans of Clase Azul Reposado will enjoy its older sibling, Clase Azul Anejo. This 25-month-matured tequila is the perfect next step in experiencing the art of oak-matured tequila.

A fine aged tequila from another brand that would be a great companion is Gran Centenario Añejo. Also aged in American oak, it spends 16 to 18 months in wood.

Food Pairings for Clase Azul Reposado

Clase Azul Reposado pairs beautifully with dessert – particularly anything that is citrus-based, such as an orange tart or pear and vanilla flan. A bitter chocolate cake will also bring out the very best of this aged tequila. For a savoury edge, try a smoked cheese.

How to serve Clase Azul Reposado

Clase Azul Reposado is designed as a sipping tequila. Its delicate citrus notes and rich vanilla aromas respond well to a single ice cube, and the interaction with the air enhances them further.

It could also make the base for a decadent cocktail – particularly one that might play with the bitter chocolate notes at its heart.

Tequila guide for whiskey drinkers

Whiskey fans that are captivated by the distillation process of their favourite pour will find the production methods of Clase Azul Reposado equally fascinating. The use of traditional brick ovens and copper pot stills in tequila distillation has many similarities to how whiskey is distilled.

The eight-month maturation period that Clase Azul Reposado spends in American ex-bourbon barrels will also be a familiar route to flavour for this cohort of drinkers. Whiskey fans will appreciate how the oak cask interacts with the spirit to mature the tequila, imbuing it with added flavour and texture over time.
