Athru Keshcorran 14 YO

Finishing in Hungarian Tokaji casks provides rich tropical fruit notes on the palate, followed by a complex finish. These uniquely numbered bottles have been overseen by Billy Walker, World Distiller of the year 2015. 6,600 bottles produced.

Athrú Keshcorran 14 is a fine single malt from the Lough Gill distillery in Co Sligo.

Created as a powerhouse collection in the early days of this now Sazerac-owned Irish whiskey maker it set out to capture the mythology of the hills and mountains surrounding its west of Ireland location.

One of a trio of single malt releases, they were crated by master distiller Billy Walker, who was brought in from Scotland to design and manage the maturation and finish of the series.

Hungarian Tokaji Casks

Keshcorran 14-year-old is a 48% single malt finished in Hungarian Tokaij casks. This sweet and noble wine is considered a dessert wine and is richly layered with lots of pineapple, vanilla, pears, brown sugar and cinnamon.

The 14-year-old whisky was matured for 10 years in ex-bourbon barrels and then finished for four years in the Tokaj casks.

The American oak had already delivered all the baking spices, nutmeg, creamy lychee and honey that bourbon always promises.

The finish then layered all the rich apples, sweet fruits, ginger and honey from the Tokaj on top. It’s a wonderful pour that’s desinged to honour the first great High King of Ireland, King Cormac.

Tasting notes

Aroma

The nose of this fine single malt is heavy with vanilla, oak and brown sugar, creating a distillery character that is immediately recognisable.

Palate

Athrú Keshcorran 14-year-old has a heavy mouthfeel that carries lots of fruits, oak, cinnamon and sweet pears. Nutmeg is dominant too with lots of complex wine notes that marry beautifully with the spirit.

Finish

Keshcorran 14 is a beautifully finished whiskey with a long and luxourious wine heavy mouthfeel that remains.

Athru Keshcorran 14 yo is a limited edition whiskey series with only 6,600 bottles released. It was a hugely hardworking release that caught the attention of whiskey fans all over the world and ultimately bringing the US drinks giant Sazerac to Co Sligo.

Sazerac bought the distillery in 2022 and has big plans for the whiskey maker on the shore of Lough Gill.
