Poitin

Poitin

A truly ancient spirits whose name means “little pot” in Irish. Referencing the small pot stills that were used in distillation. It can be made from a variety of barley, potatoes and other grains.

Poitín now has Geographical Indicative status and is protected by EU legislation in the same way Champagne in France or Feta in Greece. Proving its uniqueness as a traditional Irish product.

From being classified illegal in Ireland from1661, it wasn’t until 1997 that it was made legal once again. The category now has a range of products created from dedicated distilleries as well as whiskey producers. Sales are only going up, not just for those looking to sample an historic Irish spirit but to incorporate its characteristics into cocktails.

Characteristics of modern Poitín include earthy and creamy notes, with soft sweetness.
