History of Tullamore Distillery

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the new Tullamore distillery rises up in front of visitors on the outskirts of its home of Tullamore County Offaly.

When it opened in 2014 it fulfilled a wish of its owners William Grant & Sons, to return Tullamore whiskey production back to the town after a gap of over 60 years.

The new distillery’s Scottish owners have invested over €60 million to date in this venture. With most aspects of the whiskey making process being done on the one site. Pot still, malt whiskey and grain whiskey are all made at the distillery along with a bottling plant. The number of warehouses filled to the ceiling with will barrels of whiskey is set to double to 14, with enough space to potentially take this number up to 25 warehouses.

The original distillery closed in 1954 and a visitors’ centre housed in one of the distillery’s old boned warehouse has kept the story of Tullamore Dew alive. One of the many victims of distillery closures in the mid-20 th century, the production of Tullamore Dew had be transferred to Midleton distillery.

The new distillery’s production and warehouse capacity are proof of the ever-growing popularity of Tullamore Dew. It is the second most popular Irish Whiskey in the USA.
