Arbikie Highland Rye 2 – the Scottish rye whisky that’s laying its own path

Arbikie

Arbikie Highland Rye 2: The second edition that emerged from this Scottish family distillery used Armagnac casks to finish its innovative and flavour-packed whisky

Arbikie is a family-run, true farm-to-glass whisky distillery in the Highlands of Scotland. Located just an hour’s train journey from Dundee, it’s fully sustainable and totally innovative in the Scottish whisky industry.

Its whisky was born a collector’s item. The first edition was the first rye whisky released in Scotland in 100 years when it rolled off the Arbikie family farm in 2018. Located on the east coast of Angus, this ambitious family of young distillers set out to recapture both tradition and craft with their creations.

Armagnac Finish

This second edition of Arbikie Highland Rye was aged in first-fill American oak and finished in Armagnac barrels. The French brandy from southwest France brings its extra-matured and rustic flavours to bear on the gentle, spicy rye whisky.

Just 1,220 bottles were released, and each is distinguished by its unusual flavour profile of dates, apricot, and caraway, which lends a distinct aniseed or liquorice taste note to the finish.

Rye is a delicious base grain, fuelled in modern markets by its popularity in the US, where it’s a major player in the distiller’s arsenal and a wonderful component of some very famous and very popular whiskies. Arbikie add wheat and barley to their mashbill, to create this Highland Rye whisky.

Scottish Rye

The whisky maker uses Arantes Scottish rye and adds parcels of Viscount Scottish wheat and Odyssey Scottish barley to the mashbill to deepen the flavour, texture and aroma. Bottled at 46%, Arbikie’s second step along the rye road is a terrific release that, with its sibling bottles, adds up to a whole new tradition in the Highlands.
