Loch Lomond and Tomatin strengthen their swing for the 2024 golf season

Scotch whisky is no stranger to golf links clubhouses and two terrific Scottish brands are driving the sport ever higher

Whisky and golf are traditionally well met, and as the 152nd Open prepares to get underway fuelled by Loch Lomond distillery, we can sit back and watch this great partnership in action. Further ahead in 2024 is the Highland Golf Links Pro-Am on Sept 30th – Oct 2nd, sponsored by Tomatin.

The Open

The Open is one of one of golf’s four majors and the only grand slam not held in the US. Despite being an Open, and therefore open-to-all to enter, most of the players will be professional with a small number of top world amateurs taking part.

This year’s event is at Scotland’s Royal Troon and marks the tenth time this 146-year-old links course has hosted the event. It gets underway on July 18th, with the final round and victory presentations held on Sunday, July 21st.

Loch Lomond has been the main sponsor of the Open Golf Championship since 2018 and also sponsors the AEG Women’s Open. Each year, the Alexandria-based distillery crafts a special edition release to mark the Open. The 2024 edition is an exclusive single malt, matured in American oak and finished in ex-Chardonnay wine casks. Bottled at 46%, it was crafted in association with Loch Lomond’s golf ambassador, Colin Montgomerie.

The 2023 edition was a big hit with fans, also emerging at 46%, but on that occasion finished in red wine casks, giving this very special whisky a burst of red berries, vanilla and dark chocolate. There’s a slight touch of peat to this single malt also, giving it a deeper and more complex personality.

Highland Golf Links Pro Am

Further along the golfing calendar is this year’s Highland Golf Links Pro-Am. Tomatin is driving this major event, which sees teams of four compete over three days across three fantastic links courses in the Highlands.

Seventy-five teams took part in 2023, each consisting of three amateurs and one professional who joined forces over three days in a stroke-play tournament.

Hosted on three stellar championship courses: Royal Dornach, Cabot Highlands and Nairn Golf Club, the 2024 prize fund is £50,000, plus the winner will receive a 50-year-old single malt from Tomatin worth £17,000.

Teams will also have the opportunity to try Tomatin’s Italian Collection throughout the event. This series consists of three single malts finished in Italian wine casks: Amarone, Marsala, and Barolo. This series follows Tomatin’s hugely popular Portuguese Collection, which comprised three single malts matured in Portuguese wine casks: Port, Madeira, and Moscatel.

Tomatin Port Cask is a 14-year-old single malt matured in tawny port wine casks. Revelling in the dark fruits and cherry notes of the Portwood, this fine single malt is a classic Tomatin release.
