Bottle of the Week: Yellow Spot

Yellow Spot

Yellow Spot is a wonderful 12-year-old Single Pot Still with all the trademark flavour and complexity that we’ve come to expect from this exciting range of whiskey. Originally created by Mitchell and Sons, it’s now produced by Irish Distillers in Midleton. It’s a dominant representative of the Pot Still technique and this particular colour in the Spot range is a huge fan favourite.

Matured to at least 12 years, it marries whiskey from three different casks – bourbon, sherry and Malaga. These each impart a constituent and attractive element to the whiskey, building a layered and complex flavour profile. It has overtaken its younger Green Spot sibling but is also less showy than the older Red Spot.

Bottled at 46%, it delivers an enticing range of flavours and aromas. Spot fans find their loyalties to the better known Green Spot challenged when introduced to Yellow Spot. The extra time in cask as well as the combination vatting make the flavours more pronounced, its personality and aroma deeper and more fragrant too.

Expect lots of spice and pepper on the nose with hints of cloves, honey and ripe fruit. The taste follows suit with lots of honey, coffee, chocolate, vanilla and pot still spice. It’s a sweet and elegant whiskey with a robust and slow finish.
